On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, families, first responders, local organizations, businesses, and community groups gathered at Marge Goodfellow Community Park for National Night Out in New Freedom, Pennsylvania.
Hosted by the Southern Regional Police Department, the free community event took place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the park along Playground Avenue and Railroad Avenue.

PhotoArtGraphy had the privilege of serving as the volunteer event photographer for the evening, documenting the people, activities, first responders, and countless little moments that made the event special.
National Night Out is designed to strengthen relationships between residents and the first responders who serve their communities. In New Freedom, that mission translated into an evening where families could meet local police officers and other first responders in a relaxed, fun environment while enjoying activities, demonstrations, food, games, and entertainment – all free of charge.

Bringing the Community & First Responders Together
Emergency vehicles naturally attracted plenty of attention throughout the evening, especially with the frequent calls from the fire whistle for firetrucks to head out (and then return).
Families had opportunities to see police vehicles, fire apparatus, and other emergency equipment up close while meeting some of the people who serve the Southern York County community.
Fire department demonstrations gave attendees a closer look at the work performed by local first responders, while one of the evening’s especially memorable sights was a small police helicopter taking off from the event.
For children in particular, National Night Out provided an opportunity to interact with police officers and first responders outside of an emergency situation. Instead of meeting during a stressful moment, families could talk, ask questions, explore equipment, and simply spend time together.
Those personal interactions are at the heart of what National Night Out is intended to accomplish.

Plenty of Activities for Kids
There certainly wasn’t a shortage of things for children to do.
Happy Village Play Café, working with Thriving Littles Co., helped create an activity area geared especially toward younger children. The play zone included inflatable bounce areas along with activities for babies and young children, including a ball pit, slide, sensory activities, and imaginative play opportunities.

A local Scouting group provided another especially creative activity: a LEGO vehicle building and racing station.
Children could construct their own vehicles using LEGO bricks and then send their creations racing down an inclined track. It combined creativity, friendly competition, and a little informal engineering into an activity that kept kids – and plenty of parents – engaged.
Southern York County Recreation also provided oversized yard games for families to enjoy together. Giant versions of familiar games such as chess, checkers, Jenga, and Connect Four created another gathering area where children and adults could slow down and play together.
Between inflatables, LEGO racing, yard games, demonstrations, emergency vehicles, and the many booths throughout the park, families had plenty to explore during the two-hour event.

Free Food & Frozen Treats
The evening’s complimentary food was another example of the community-focused nature of National Night Out.
Families could enjoy cookout favorites, refreshments, snacks, pizza, Italian ice, ice cream, and other treats without having to purchase admission or pay for activities throughout the evening.

Local food businesses participating in the event included Sons of Sicily Pizzeria & Grill, Rita’s Italian Ice, Bonkey’s Ice Cream & Snoballs, and Gillice Italian Ice & Ice Cream.
Miles Appliance was also among the local businesses supporting the event.
Making the evening free – including the activities, food, and refreshments – helped create an event where families could simply come to the park, spend time together, and participate regardless of their budget.

Chick-fil-A Shrewsbury Joins the Fun
Chick-fil-A Shrewsbury was also part of the evening, bringing along one of its most recognizable representatives – the Chick-fil-A Cow!
Families could stop by the Chick-fil-A booth and spin a prize wheel for a chance to receive coupons for menu items such as kids’ meals, milkshakes, and other treats. The Cow naturally attracted plenty of attention from children and families throughout the event.
The Shrewsbury Chick-fil-A also has a personal connection for our family, as my two youngest sons have worked there for many years. That made it especially fun for me to see and photograph some of their friends while covering National Night Out.

And in one of the more unexpected photo opportunities of the evening, an Elvis Presley impersonator stopped by – giving me the chance to capture a photograph of Elvis posing alongside the Chick-fil-A Cow. You never quite know what you’re going to see at a community event!

Helping Local Students Through “Stuff a Cruiser”
National Night Out wasn’t only about entertainment.
The Stuff a Cruiser school supply drive gave attendees an opportunity to help children and families in the local community.
Working alongside Growing Hands for Brighter Futures, the initiative encouraged families to bring new school supplies to the event. Donations were collected to support local students in need, with participants receiving additional raffle opportunities for contributing school supplies.
It was a fitting addition to an event centered around community relationships: families enjoying an evening together while also helping other families prepare for the upcoming school year.

Free Vision Screenings for Children
The New Freedom Lions Club was also on hand providing a valuable service for local families.
Through the Lions KidSight program, free vision screenings were available for children and teenagers from six months through 18 years of age.
These screenings can help identify potential vision problems in children who may not yet be old enough to recognize or communicate that they are having difficulty seeing.
It was another example of National Night Out bringing together not just entertainment, but organizations providing meaningful resources for local families.

Local Organizations & Businesses Meet the Community
Booths and informational tables stretched throughout Marge Goodfellow Community Park as businesses, nonprofit organizations, community groups, schools, churches, and other local organizations participated in the evening.
Among those represented was St. John the Baptist Catholic School, connecting with local families and sharing information about the school community.
Local professionals and businesses also participated, including a local realty, along with representatives from other area businesses, insurance organizations, and community-focused groups.
Many tables offered giveaways, activities, information, or opportunities simply to stop and have a conversation.
That variety helped make National Night Out more than an event organized by the police department. It became a gathering representing many different parts of the Southern York County community.

More Than Activities & Giveaways
There were certainly plenty of things to photograph throughout the evening: fire trucks, police vehicles, a helicopter, bounce houses, LEGO races, enormous chess pieces, food, booths, demonstrations, and giveaways.
But some of the most meaningful photographs from an event like this aren’t necessarily photographs of the attractions.
They’re photographs of the people.
Children laughing with their friends. Parents watching their kids play. Police officers talking with families. First responders showing children their equipment. Volunteers serving food. Business owners meeting their neighbors. Families sitting together in the park.
Those unscripted moments are what transform photographs of an event into photographs of a community.
