Stage Magic, Performance Skills, and Confidence-Building for Teens (Ages 12–19)

PhotoArtGraphy Teen Magician Workshops are designed for teens ages 12–19 who want to learn the art of magic, develop stronger performance skills, and become more confident engaging with other people.
Under the guidance of performer and creative instructor Drew Jensen, participants explore both the technical and performance sides of magic – learning not only how an effect works, but how timing, presentation, personality, storytelling, audience interaction, and confidence can turn a simple trick into an entertaining experience.
These workshops are appropriate for complete beginners as well as teens who already know some magic and want to improve their technique, presentation, or stage presence.
Based in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, PhotoArtGraphy regularly serves Southern York County, PA, as well as nearby areas of northern Carroll, Baltimore, and Harford counties in Maryland.
Meet Your Instructor: Drew Jensen
Teen Magician Workshops are personally taught by PhotoArtGraphy owner Drew Jensen. I have more than three decades of experience working with and instructing middle school and high school students, along with a lifelong background in creative performance.
My performance experience includes stage magic, acting, comedy, ventriloquism, theater, interpretive speech, directing productions, and performing in schools, churches, and nonprofit settings. Magic has always interested me because it brings together so many different skills at once: technique, timing, storytelling, audience awareness, creativity, confidence, and the ability to communicate clearly while keeping people engaged.
I’m also a husband and father of three young adult sons. My wife is a schoolteacher, and we live in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, just minutes from I-83 and the Maryland state line.
My teaching style is relaxed, upbeat, encouraging, and hands-on. I want teens to feel comfortable experimenting, asking questions, practicing repeatedly, making mistakes, and gradually becoming more confident in both the technique and the presentation of an effect.
I offer one-on-one instruction at a family’s home or another agreed-upon location within a reasonable driving distance. Workshops may also be held at my home in New Freedom when my wife is home. When several young people in the same general area are interested in similar instruction, small-group workshops may also be arranged.

What Teens Will Learn
Teen Magician Workshops combine hands-on magic instruction with performance, communication, and confidence-building.
Topics may include:
- Fundamental magic techniques and basic sleight-of-hand skills
- Card, coin, object, and close-up magic techniques appropriate to the participant’s experience level
- Understanding misdirection and how attention works
- Timing, pacing, and knowing when to let a magical moment breathe
- Presenting an effect naturally rather than simply demonstrating a trick
- Using storytelling, humor, and personality to make magic more entertaining
- Audience interaction and learning how to involve spectators comfortably
- Stage presence, voice, eye contact, and body language
- Developing a performance style that feels natural to the individual
- Practicing, refining, and troubleshooting an effect before performing it for others
- Building confidence through hands-on performance experience
The exact focus can be adjusted to the participant. A complete beginner may start with foundational effects and presentation skills, while a teen who already performs magic may want help refining technique, improving audience engagement, or developing a stronger performance style.

Learning More Than Just Tricks
There are countless magic tutorials available online, but knowing the secret behind an effect is very different from knowing how to perform it well. Good magic depends on presentation. A simple effect performed with confidence, strong timing, an engaging story, and natural audience interaction can often be far more entertaining than a technically complicated trick that is presented without personality.
Teen Magician Workshops therefore focus not only on how magic works, but also on how to communicate with an audience, direct attention, build anticipation, recover when something unexpected happens, and create a performance that people enjoy watching. The goal is to help participants become more thoughtful performers rather than simply collectors of tricks.
Performance Skills That Go Beyond Magic
A teen does not need to dream of becoming a professional magician to benefit from learning magic. Practicing and performing magic can help develop skills that carry into many other areas of life, including public speaking and communication, confidence interacting with other people, hand-eye coordination and attention to detail, creative thinking and problem-solving, storytelling and presentation, memory and sequencing, learning how to practice patiently and improve through repetition, and thinking calmly and adapting when something unexpected happens.
Some teens may want to perform for friends or family. Others may eventually enjoy performing at school, church, community events, talent shows, or other settings. Others may simply enjoy having an unusual and creative skill to explore. All of those are valid reasons to learn.
One-on-One or Small Group Instruction
One-on-one magician workshops allow instruction to be adapted closely to a teen’s experience level, interests, personality, and goals. A session might focus on learning new effects, improving sleight of hand, developing presentation ideas, practicing audience interaction, improving timing, or rehearsing a short performance.
Small-group workshops may also be arranged when two or more teens in the same general area are interested in similar instruction. Group sessions provide additional opportunities to practice performing for other people, observe different presentation styles, and develop audience interaction skills. Families are welcome to inquire individually – you do not need to organize a complete group before contacting PhotoArtGraphy.
The goal in either format is to keep the experience positive, creative, hands-on, and encouraging while helping participants develop both technical and performance skills.
Workshop Location & Parent Information
One-on-one magician workshops can take place at your home or another mutually agreed-upon location that works well for hands-on instruction and performance practice. Workshops may also be held at my home in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, when my wife is home.
Parents are always welcome to remain nearby during instruction. My goal is for both teens and their families to feel comfortable with the workshop arrangement from the very beginning. Instruction involving minors is kept age-appropriate, and effects, props, and performance material are selected with the participant’s age, experience, and safety in mind.
For families who prefer instruction at their home or another location, travel within 10 miles of New Freedom, PA is available for a small fee. Locations beyond 10 miles can also be arranged at a reasonable mileage-based rate.
Workshops are scheduled based on interest and availability, including evenings and weekends.

Why Learn Magic with Drew?
My approach to teaching magic comes from years of performing, working with young people, and combining different forms of live entertainment. My background includes stage magic, acting, comedy, ventriloquism, theater, interpretive speech, directing productions, and other creative performance work. Each of those disciplines contributes something to good magic.
Acting helps with character and presentation. Comedy teaches timing. Ventriloquism develops audience awareness and performance discipline. Theater teaches staging and communication. Magic brings all of those elements together with technique and misdirection.
I also understand that performing magic for another person can feel intimidating at first. It is one thing to practice a trick alone. It is another thing to look someone in the eye, speak clearly, control the pace of the moment, and confidently perform it for them. That is why these workshops are designed to provide plenty of practice in a supportive, low-pressure environment. A participant does not need to arrive already knowing magic. Curiosity and a willingness to practice are enough to get started.
