Just Count! – An SATB Choral Piece for Developing Choirs
For SATB choir and piano
Just Count! is an original four-part choral piece created for a small developing choir learning how to move from singing together in unison to holding independent Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass parts.
The piece begins simply with unison counting and gradually introduces divided voices, call-and-response singing, four-part harmony, rhythmic independence, rests, staggered entrances, and moments when singers must maintain their own pattern while hearing something completely different around them. The counting theme keeps the music fun and accessible while giving students practical experience with skills they need for more advanced SATB singing.
Just Count! was designed with developing middle and high school singers in mind. Vocal ranges are kept approachable, including a lower Tenor part written in bass clef, and the piano accompaniment is intended to provide useful support without requiring an advanced accompanist.
